I agree with the "tall empire" thing, and wish too there was an option for it. If you've been playing on a lower difficulty, it might require a higher difficulty to draw all these things out too. I find this way of looking at it merges very well into the concept of map control and adds another layer to the strategic play.Īnyway I'm still discovering this aspect of things myself too, but I think there is quite a bit more than meets the eye.
Many of the II and III units also have abilities that make them more valuable than just their attack score, these most noticeably being crowd control abilities.īut efficiency is a big thing: if you can field cheaper, faster-to-make armies that can fell more expensive, slower-to-make enemy armies, you get more control of the strategic map. For example, most Pikeman are easily more gold/production-efficient for fighting mounted units than a IV unit without polearm. It's true that a IV unit will stomp any ol' II unit but it's also true that for the same price/production you can produce 2-3 II units that will easily make kebab of that IV unit. This is a real issue, and one that held me back a little from truly embracing it for a while.īut then I did some research and found that there is a real gold/production inefficiency with Tier IV units.
